BORIS JOHNSON TO LEAD LONDON LOW CARBON ECONOMY EVENT - 'BASE London' MAY 27

Boris Johnson will deliver the opening speech at a major conference to promote the opportunities for London coming from a low carbon economy, it has been announced on Tuesday, April 6, 2010.

BASE London (Business and a Sustainable Environment - London), organised in conjunction with the London Development Agency, will be a day long event at ExCel on 27 May. It will be jam packed with a broad range of speakers and events, seeking to facilitate collaboration between private and public sectors in all aspects of sustainability, with the aim of aiding the development of policy and practical solutions.

Speakers announced so far, in addition to the Mayor of London, include Baroness Valentine, Chair of London First, Steve Norris, a former Transport Secretary, member of the Transport for London Board and Chair of BASE London's advisory board, Ian Marchant, CEO of Scottish and Southern Energy, Andreas J Goss, CEO of Siemens UK, Ian Barlow, Chairman of Think London, Shaun McCarthy, Chair of the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012, and green entrepreneur Jeremy Leggett of Solar Century. Further top name business and political speakers will be announced in coming weeks.

The conference sessions will focus on London's global leadership role in developing a low carbon economic model, international best practice, and developing 'green collar' job creation. There will also be breakout sessions that will examine in detail the delivery of London's low carbon transformation covering the practicalities involved in decentralised energy, improving the sustainability of London's office and housing stock, transport, energy efficiency, waste, air quality and food security.

Boris Johnson said; 'I want London to harness the opportunities coming from a low carbon age with verve and optimism. As the powerhouse of the UK's economy, it is vital that the capital emerges from the downturn ready to face the challenges of this new energy era. BASE London will provide the forum for organisations to convert these aims into actions.'
